Since my training in collaborative law in 2005, I have been encouraging my clients to consider this alternative to the more costly and acrimonious litigation that can be so destructive to the ongoing relationships of the entire family. Although I continue to represent clients in court when necessary, I much prefer working with clients and their spouses as part of a collaborative team to reach a resolution that is geared specifically to their unique situation rather than one that is decreed by a 'stranger' in a black robe. I am currently teaching a class in Collaborative Law at the University of Richmond Law School. I have published a book entitled 'Maggie in the Middle' about a young girl whose parents are going through a nasty custody battle. Unfortunately the parents had never been offered the collaborative alternative to resolve their dispute and left it to the judge.
