To live is to be ever changing and hopefully ever growing. Bob Dylan in his song 'Forever Young' writes: May you have a strong foundation when the winds of changes shift. Divorce, is a profound change for each member of the family, and especially so, for the children. Through my work in private practice, I have seen too often, the trauma and harm caused by divorce. My interest in Collaborative Practice stems from my passion and commitment to greatly reduce or eliminate such trauma, to help each member of the family re-establish stability during this time of chaos, to enable a sense of meaningfulness when the structure of one's life seems to be breaking down, and as Dylan says, to provide a strong foundation when the winds of changes shift. My goal in working within the Collaborative Model is always the same--to shift the process of divorce and its aftermath from a potentially traumatic experience to a transformative experience which unlocks one's potential, one's strengths and one's search for new meaning in the next chapter of one's life.
I have been a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in private practice for over 20 years. I have extensive experience working with children and adolescents in that at least half of my work at any given time focuses on that population. I believe my work in reducing the traumatic impact of divorce and promoting the process of healing in children/adolescents uniquely qualifies me as a Collaborative Practice Mental Health Professional as compared with those who work exclusively or primarily with adults. The remainder of my time is devoted to adults, couples and families. The goals of marital/couples therapy are often the same as those in my Collaborative Practice work--seek the common ground, improve communication, enable each person to understand (though not necessarily agree with) the point of view of the other and lay the groundwork for emotional healing, and hopefully, forgiveness.
